Q. Hi Breanna! Love your blog! I do my makeup in my walk-in closet and the lighting that my husband recently installed makes my face look very pale. What’s the best light for applying makeup? Thanks, Rebecca.
A. Thank you for the great question. When I work with clients I find it fascinating to learn where they apply their makeup at home, I think you’re the first closet! Lighting is an integral part of makeup application. Natural daylight is best, it’s unforgiving and you can see everything—but it’s not harsh. If your makeup is applied well and looks good in daylight, it will look good in any light—indoors or outdoors. When I work with a client on location I always try to do makeup in a well lit area, with as much natural-light as possible. If the weather is agreeable, I’ll even go outside, which is particularly helpful for outdoor weddings or events. In high school, I used to do my makeup in the car {don’t freak out Mom, the car was parked} because of the excellent natural light. If you can’t do your makeup near a natural-light source, I definitely recommend switching to different lighting.
Fluorescent lighting is very harsh; you find it in most offices and the dreaded dressing room. I will never understand that logic; dressing rooms should have flattering light and flattering {fun house?} mirrors! Fluorescent light has a green cast that makes the skin look sickly and washed-out. It sounds like your husband installed a fluorescent light with your looking so pale. Incandescent light is common for most household lamps; it gives off a warm yellow light that’s more flattering to the skin. However, it doesn’t allow you to see all the details clearly, making you more likely to miss an area or not blend as effectively. I remember my mom had an old makeup mirror that used incandescent lamps and it made me look yellowy and made it difficult to blend foundation and apply blush. The best indoor lighting for makeup would be halogen. Halogen lighting is very close to daylight, it’s the perfect option for those that cannot do their makeup near a natural-light source. Have your hubby swap out your existing lighting to a halogen bulb and you will be sitting pretty. Thanks for the question Rebecca!
