Q & A with BB: Lady in Red

Q. I’ve been kind of curious and wanting to try a red lipstick look. But, of course, I have no idea about any of it. So I figured I could ask for an expert opinion (if you don’t mind).
What color would you suggest would look good for me? And what brand would be pretty guaranteed not to smudge if I were kissing the boy? Thanks, Nicole.

A. A red lip is a classic and timeless look, kudos to you for wanting to try it. Red lipstick is one of those great colors that can be worn by anyone for any occasion. That’s right you read that correctly, there is a red lip color for everyone. However, many women are reticent to try the shade for fear of somehow getting it wrong. Or women think the color is too sexy. A red lip is a bold color choice, but that is part of the fun. Slick on a coat of red lipstick and transform your look entirely. It can also transform your mood-go from blah to babe in ten seconds or less. I urge you to try the red lip look, embrace it. With the holidays coming up, it’s a perfect time to make your red lip debut.

When wearing a red lip keep the rest of your look fresh and contemporary. Make sure your skin is evened out and properly concealed as red lipstick draws attention to your face and can emphasize any redness in your skin. Keep your eyes clean and defined with mascara and eye liner on the top lash. Warm up your skin with some bronzer and blush with a light hand.

If you want to try a more subtle approach to the red lip, try patting it on your bottom lip with a finger. This will thin out the texture and make it sheerer, for a light stained look. When it comes to color selection set aside some time. Try a variety of shades; if one works for you, you will know it right away {light bulb moment}. Don’t get caught up in the names, try both orange based and blue based reds to find your most flattering shade. Here are my recommendations for red lipsticks for a variety of skin tones:

{Red lips for fair skin tones} Image from InStyle.com

Fair skin tones- NARS lipstick in Manhunt, Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Blazing Red 638, Revlon Cherries in the Snow lipstick, NARS Matte Lip Pencil in Pop Life, M.A.C. lipstick in Ladybug

Medium skin tones- NARS Semi Matte lipstick in Fire Down Below, M.A.C. lipstick in Ruby Woo, Bobbi Brown lipstick in Red, NARS Semi Matte Heatwave, M.A.C. lipstick in Russian Red

Darker skin tones- NARS Pure Matte lipstick in Vesuvio, M.A.C. lipstick in Chili, Bobbi Brown lipstick in Brick Red, Rouge Dior Lipcolor in Ara Red 999, M.A.C. lipstick in Viva Glam I

A universal shade for all skin tones- Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Lipstick in RD 165

As per your question about a long wearing formula I personally don’t particularly care for them. For a red lip color especially as both the color and feel tend to be heavy or sticky. Lipsticks that are advertised as long wearing are typically very drying to the lips and can feel tight and dry. However, there are some exceptions. M.A.C.’s new Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Prolong lasts, feels creamy, and won’t transfer to your boyfriend. I think that would fit the bill for you. Thanks again for your fantastic question. Happy shopping!
