I am a Gemini. Therefore my living situation is often, how do you say, organized chaos? To the casual observer it may appear as if the mountains of clothes on the bed are dirty {False. They’re clean}. Or the stacks and stacks of old magazines are junk. This is a fallacy. They are, in fact, tomes of endless inspiration. I don’t think I’ll be on an episode of Hoarders anytime soon. I ruthlessly edit my closet for one thing, so much so it’s a wonder I have anything to wear other than heels and rings. But sometimes stuff accumulates and piles up. This definitely applies to the all important makeup bag and medicine cabinet. In the interest of saving yourself time, I recommend you take a good, long, hard look at the products that are currently occupying precious space. It is time to be merciless. If you can’t remember the last time you ever used it, if ever, it is time to toss it. You can either junk your stuff completely, or gift them to your local women’s shelter or high school for their play productions. You want your core, daily products to be front and center and ready to go. You can separate your fun, “going out,” a la carte products from your daily faves. This will make getting ready much easier. Like your closet, you only want to keep the products you actually love and use on a regular basis. As far as makeup and skincare products, they don’t last forever. If items are old and the contents have separated or have changed colors, or if they have an odor {gag} throw them in the garbage. If pencils are missing caps or products are missing lids, it’s best to throw them away as well. Here is a general guideline:
Foundation- 1 to 2 years
Concealer-1 year
Powder- 2 years
Mascara- 2 to 3 months
Lipstick- 1 to 2 years
Lip/eye pencil-1 year
Eye shadow- 1 to 2 years
Powder blush- 2 years
Cream blush- 6 months to 1 year
Moisturizer- 12 to 18 months
Eye cream- 1 year
SPF- 1 year
Self tanner- 1 year
If you have any specific product expiration questions don’t hesitate to ask.
BreBeauty Tip: To ensure the mascara you’re using isn’t old and dried out {resulting in irritating flakes in your eyes and on your face} take a piece of white medical tape and write the date you opened it on your new tube. If it’s been three months it’s time to toss and treat yourself to a new one.
Do you edit and clean out your makeup bag?
