With fall now underway, and your manicure reflecting the change in season, its time for a makeup overhaul as well. Fall is a great opportunity to explore new trends and expand your makeup repertoire. I love the darker and more dramatic color options that accompany my favorite time of year, and the colors are flattering for all skin tones. The transition from summer to fall couldn’t be simpler. Do you normally reach for a pale pink lipstick? Instead opt for a deep burgundy to give your look some edge and polish. Do you wear black eyeliner on the daily? Swap it for violet to add a twinkle to your gaze. Look to trends for inspiration and remember, only highlight one feature (i.e. eyes or lips not both) and trend at a time. You have all season to try them all! Here are my favorite makeup trends for fall 2011:
Defined brows- Brows frame the face and complete your look like no other. They can make you look more youthful and polished. Bottom line? Don’t overlook them. Fill them in softly with an angle brush and taupe eye shadow like M.A.C. Omega for a natural looking brow.
Magenta lips- One of my favorite fall makeup trends is the statement making lip. This color combo of purple and pink flatters all skin tones. Try L’Oreal Colour Riche in Sea Fleur or Sephora Rouge Cream Lipstick in Valentine 09 to get the look.
Metallic, smoky eyes- Metallics reflect light beautifully and molten metals look fantastic on every eye color and every skin tone. Gold, silver, copper, bronze, and graphite are all stunning! I urge you to try them all this fall and into winter and the holidays as well. M.A.C. eyeshadow in Bronze is one I reach for again and again.
Red lips- A sexy classic look that endures time and trends. These lips are powerful and feminine. Reach for a deep red like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella for a matte look or add a dab of clear gloss to the bottom lip for shine.
Navy and gold eyeshadow- This unexpected combination of shades is surprisingly beautiful. It looks particularly great on brown eyes. Try the navy on the lid up into the crease and smudge the gold shade on your lower lash line for an eye catching effect. Two shades worth trying are M.A.C. Contrast and Goldmine.
Glossy lids- Just like gloss reflects light beautifully on your lips the same is true when gloss is applied to your eyelids. I will be honest, this look takes some getting used to, but it’s so fresh, unexpected and thereby appealing. Prep your eyelids with a touch of concealer and tap on either a natural balm or clear lipgloss concentrating the product on the brow bones.
Highlighted skin- For fresh and radiant skin try powder or cream highlighters. For cream try M.A.C. Colour Base in Pearl for lighter skin tones and Fawntastic for darker skin tones. For powder try NARS in Albatross. Apply over key areas like cheek and brow bones, the bridge of the nose, the inner corners of the eyes, the cupids bow, shoulders and décolleté. When the light hits the skin it creates a subtle effect that’s sophisticated and oh-so-sexy.
Wine lips- A merlot mouth is a great change if you tend to favor true reds. I love to use lip pencils for a matte effect and maximum color pay off. Try M.A.C. Lip Pencils in Burgundy, Brick, and Absolutely It.
Flushed, rosy cheeks- I love the way cheeks look when flushed from being in the crisp, fall air. Mimic the look with russet blushes like NARS Mounia and M.A.C. Fever. These blushes will emphasize any redness in the skin so even out with foundation and concealer beforehand. Apply with a light hand; a little goes a long way with these pigmented blushes.
Violet eyeliner- Such a fun alternative to basic black! This regal jewel tone makes green eyes look greener, and warms up brown and blue eyed girls. Line the upper and lower rims to encompass the eye, try Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Violet Ink.
Nude, glossy lips- Shiny, nude lips are the perfect day look. When paired with dark eyes, they are a great counterpoint for evening. Apply it thinly for a sheer effect, or layer it with multiple coats for more opacity. Try NARS Lipgloss in Striptease for a sexy pout.
Lush lashes- Major lashes are a flattering and fetching look. Curl with your Shu Uemura eyelash curler and go to town with your mascara. You can layer both volumizing and lengthening formulas for maximum impact. Try false lashes for a fun and flirty effect on your next night out.
Flawless, matte skin- A super smooth, powder fresh finish is ideal for fall. Exfoliate your skin prior to makeup application and use a primer to make your skin look even smoother. Apply a matte finish, liquid foundation like M.A.C. Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 and use oil blotting sheets throughout the day as needed to squelch excess shine.
