{From my baby shower safety pinned dress exhibit A}

Time has really been flying by. If life continues to speed on like it has been during my pregnancy I’d like to call an official time out and press pause for a little bit. I love being pregnant.  I’m trying really hard to savor every moment and enjoy this time with baby boy before I share him with the world. Even the not so fun moments-like not being able to sleep because of my busy, anxious head and even more busy little guy, or throwing up in the restroom of Target (and Red Robin and Olive Garden and The Capital Grille…), or walking around my baby shower with my tights falling down and my dress safety pinned shut in order to prevent another wardrobe malfunction the likes of which we haven’t seen since Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl. Even those moments I want to remember and treasure. Because it makes the wonderful pregnancy moments even more fantastic…like seeing his sweet face in 3D, and feeling his jabs and kicks to my ribs while his already proud papa reads him a new book each day.  I want my son to have siblings (at least one-a sister perhaps?) but it’s possible this is my only pregnancy in life, you just never know, so I’m trying extra hard to just be in the moment and appreciate it.

When you’re prepping for baby and creating lists upon lists of things you (still) need, and reading and re-reading product reviews, drafting birth plans, and downloading pregnancy and baby Apps, it’s so easy to get caught up in all the planning for the future that you forget to enjoy the present. Not that you can really blame me for being caught up in the future…ten tiny fingers and toes are some pretty incredible things to look forward to.

1. Moisturize and use primer to prep your skin for makeup. Using a foundation or powder brush, apply your foundation from the center of your face, blending downward and outward. Apply another layer over areas that need more coverage. Apply concealer with a concealer brush over and under the eyes. Using a large fluffy powder brush set your makeup completely with the pressed powder.
2. Using a fluffy powder brush, smile to find the round, fleshy, apple of your cheeks and apply your Deep Throat blush, blending softly up into the hairline for a natural flush.
3. Apply Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base all over the lid up to the eyebrows. Apply the DUO eye shadows of Madrague to the lid and slightly up to the crease, but not above it, following the natural shape of the eye socket. You want the majority of the color and product to be on the lid.
4. Using a pencil brush, like NARS Eye Contour Brush, apply the darker, matte caramel shade of Madrague eye shadow to the crease. Following the shape of the eye socket. Be sure you carry the eye shadow just slightly above the crease so you can see the color when your eyes are open. Using a clean tapered blending brush, like NARS Small Dome Eye Brush, softly blend the lid and crease eye shadows together, extending slightly out to the temples, until you achieve the desired color, shape, and effect.
5. Using your pencil brush and Bengali eyeshadow, lightly press in and apply to the lower lash line, smudging the product into the lower lashes, smoking out the line and blending to achieve the desired effect. You want the most concentration of color and product to be on the outer edge and corner of the eye. Concentrate on the outer edge and draw the line all the way in towards the inner corner of the eye, getting thinner as you reach the tear duct.
6. Using NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via Veneto, starting at the outer lashes and working your way in, apply a thin, tight line to the upper lashes. Drawing the line thinner as you reach the inner corner and tear duct. You can go over the line to smooth it out, even out any mistakes, and make a slightly thicker line on the outer edge. Again, you want the most concentration of color and product to be on the outer edge and corner of the eye. You really want to deposit the product at the base of the lashes, making the lashes look thick and lush and further defining the eye.
7. Using Iceberg pencil gently trace a thin, tight line to the lower lash waterline for an eye opening effect.
8. Curl your lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. Get as far back to the eyelid as possible (without pinching!) and pump the curler for ten seconds to really lock in the curl. Apply volumizing mascara to the upper and lower lashes, getting as far back to the root of the lashes as possible for a thick, rich look.
9. Use a synthetic bristle angle brush to lightly fill in your brows with NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Portobello. Use short, upward strokes- you’re creating a shadow effect, the illusion that there is slightly more hair.
10. Line and fill in the lips completely with Tonga lip pencil. Apply a coat of NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Buenos Aires to complete your Courteney Cox Cougar Town look.

The pairing of a brown smoky eye and nude glossy lip is a look I recreate on clients (and myself) again and again. This particular pin is very popular on my “Stealing Beauty” board, with 253 repins and 47 likes. To attain the look try Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Lace Beige, at least two coats of Dior Diorshow Blackout Waterproof Mascara, and even out and perfect skin tone with Dior Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Hydrating Makeup SPF10 in Sand.

This look is intense in its editorial appeal, but you can definitely glean everyday inspiration from it. Confession: I did not watch the Grammys last night. Not even for a minute. I was far too wrapped up in the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead. Apply everywhere the sun would hit you naturally, the bony prominences of the face-nose, chin, temple and forehead blending up into the hairline. To sculpt and slim your face, apply the brown powder directly under your cheekbones to contour, blending softly into the foundation and powder. You don’t want any harsh obvious lines or stripes, be sure to blend everything together. Smile to find the round, fleshy, apple of your cheeks and apply your Amour blush, blending softly up into the hairline for a natural flush.
3. Using a synthetic bristle brush, like M.A.C.’s 242, apply Eye Basics in Linen all over the lid up to the eyebrows. Apply Lhasa eye shadow to the lid and slightly up to the crease, but not above it, following the natural shape of the eye socket. You want the majority of the color and product to be on the lid.
4. Using a pencil brush, like M.A.C.’s 219, apply Caviar eye shadow to the crease. Following the shape of the eye socket. Be sure you carry the eye shadow just slightly above the crease so you can see the color when your eyes are open. Using a clean tapered blending brush, like M.A.C.’s 222, softly blend the cream and powder eye shadows together until you achieve the desired color, shape, and effect.

When Taylor Swift arrived for her Vogue photo shoot with Mario Testino she was asked if she would be willing to wear bangs for her picture. After discussing creating the illusion of bangs, Swift exclaimed, “Oh just cut it, its Vogue.” Cut it they did, and I think she looks incredible with her new fringe. P.S. I would have done the same thing; I’m with Taylor, its Vogue!

Makeup artist Gucci Westman emphasized Taylor’s blue eyes with lots of black eye liner {try M.A.C. Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Engraved} and multiple coats of black mascara for a rock and roll inspired look. The rest of her makeup was kept soft with light peach blush {try NARS blush in Sex Appeal} and her lips were subdued with a creamy beige lipstick {try M.A.C. lipstick in Shy Girl} so as to not compete with the eyes. Oribe rocked her bangin’ (pun intended) haircut and tousled her layers with texturizing spray {try Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray}.

Every Christmas I can count on two certainties. One, I will bake and subsequently eat entirely too many cookies. Two, I will buy my mother yet another new signature fragrance to put under the tree. This of course implies that she has more than one signature fragrance, and she does. She has several-and she’s always on the hunt for more. I personally subscribe to the belief that your perfume or cologne is part of your identity. People identify you with your fragrance whether you’re aware of it or not. I associate my friends and family with their signature scents as they do with me. My friends, upon getting into my Jeep, are continuously telling me that my car, “smells like me.” I have been pretty loyal to my favorite fragrance for a number of years. Whereas, my mother is constantly complimenting people on their choice of perfume and immediately requests the name and brand. For some reason, I find this exchange a bit rude, like she’s stealing their identities! I had once read in an Allure article about personal fragrance and learned that the French hold their eau de parfum in high regard. So much so that they keep their signature brand their own personal secret. The next time someone inquires about my signature fragrance? I plead the French.

This look focuses on flawless and radiant skin, spend a little more time perfecting your complexion.
2. Smile to find the round, fleshy, apple of your cheeks and apply your crème blush, blending softly up into the hairline and a bit lower than the apple for a natural flush. Using a large fluffy brush, set your foundation, concealer, and crème blush completely with pressed powder. Using a powder brush, lightly apply bronzer everywhere the sun would hit you naturally. Blend it over your temple, cheekbones, and chin in a 3 shape alongside your face. Blend it over your forehead, nose, and neck as well to add some warmth. To sculpt and slim your face, apply the brown powder directly under your cheekbones to contour, blending softly into the foundation and powder. You don’t want any harsh obvious lines or stripes, be sure to blend everything together. Using a synthetic bristle eye shadow or concealer brush, apply M.A.C. Pigment in Naked to the tops of your cheekbones to highlight, blending into a backward C shape from the outer edge of your eye to your cheekbone. This subtle shimmer will catch the light and sculpt your cheekbones beautifully.
3. This look is really all about the eyeliner and emulating Marilyn Monroe’s signature cat eye. Using a synthetic bristle eye shadow brush, apply M.A.C. Paint in Bare Canvas all over the eye from lash line to brow bone. Using the same synthetic bristle brush, apply Naked pigment all over the lid up to the brow bone for a subtle radiance.
4. Using a white eye pencil, draw a thin line on the waterline (read: inner rim) of the lower lashes. This simple trick will help make the whites of your eyes appear larger and brighter, an essential step in the Victoria’s Secret Angels look.
5. Using M.A.C. Penultimate Eye Liner, and a steady hand, apply a thin line to the upper lashes. Work tight against the lash line, beginning at the middle of the eye. Wherever you put the applicator down first is where you will deposit the most color and product. After you make your line or —dash—in the middle, extend the line to the outer edge of your eye and kick it up at the outer corner for a cat eye, winged effect. If you mess up simply take a Q-tip moistened with water to remove and start again. It takes patience and practice, but you’ll get there. Whatever is left on the applicator you want to use to line the inner corner and finish connecting the eye liner. Once you have achieved the line and shape you want, you can go back over the line and thicken or straighten it as needed. If it gets too thick, again you can use the wet Q-tip to fix it. You want the most concentration of color and product to be on the outer edge and corner of the eye. You really want to deposit the product at the base of the lashes, making the lashes look thick and lush and further defining the eye.
6. Curl your lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. Get as far back to the eyelid as possible (without pinching!) and pump the curler for ten seconds to really lock in the curl. Apply your volumizing black mascara to the upper and lower lashes, getting as far back to the root of the lashes as possible for a thick, rich look. Apply multiple coats until you achieve the desired look. The models did not wear false eyelashes for the 2011 show, so making the most of your natural lashes with liner and mascara is imperative.
7. Use a synthetic bristle angle brush to lightly fill in your brows with M.A.C. eye shadow in Omega. Use short, upward strokes- you’re creating a shadow effect, the illusion that there is slightly more hair.
8. Apply a coat of Freckletone Lipstick and top it off with a layer of Orange Tempera gloss for added color and shine.
9. Radiant and supple skin is essential in achieving the Victoria’s Secret Angels look. Moisturize your exposed skin and perfect any flaws or discoloration with M.A.C. Face and Body Makeup.
10. To add dimension and a light coat of golden color, lightly apply M.A.C. Skinsheen Leg Spray down the center of your arms and legs and over your collarbones to add a slenderizing highlight and complete your Victoria’s Secret Angel look.

This year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured a more natural look when it came to makeup. No false lashes and no spray tans were used to get the Angels runway ready. Do you like the more natural look? Or are you all about the false lashes and spray tans?

One of the things I enjoy most about the holidays is the lasting traditions and the ability to create new ones every year. Edit and discard. As someone who ruthlessly edits her closet, the same holds true for my makeup. I don’t believe in makeup taking up valuable space if I don’t use it or love it. Unorganized makeup tends to be dirty makeup and products languishing away at the back of a forgotten drawer can go bad before you get a chance to use them. Remove every item of makeup and appraise it accordingly-toss anything you don’t use or makeup that has gone bad and expired. If you have any products from M.A.C. set them aside to be recycled. For every six original M.A.C. container you recycle, you can receive a free lipstick, lipglass, or eye shadow of your choice (*note* Viva Glam products are not eligible for recycling or for your free item). Prime real estate. Heat and humidity are the destroyers of cosmetics and perfume. If you have ever left a beloved lipstick in the hot confines of your car you know this to be true. Bathroom cabinets and closets may be convenient but a dresser drawer in the bedroom or a shelf in the hall closet is ideal.

Divide and conquer. Separate your makeup by occasion-what you use on a daily basis, and your special occasion makeup and ala carte items. You want your daily makeup favorite’s front and center at your fingertips, ready to go. I like to organize my makeup in clear plastic bins and organizers specifically designed for cosmetics whenever possible. The Container Store is a makeup aficionados dream.  You can also use shallow, low containers made for silverware, or simply use a drawer lined with a drawer liner or shelf paper.

Like with like. I group all my like products together: powders, bronzers, blushes, concealers, primers, lipstick and lipglosses. For lipsticks and lipglosses, I store them upside down so their shade name is visible. To keep things streamlined, I always prefer eye shadows in pan form to keep in palettes organized by different looks, i.e. day colors and evening colors. I also know makeup artists that divide their eye shadow palettes by colors, i.e. greens; blues, etc. select whichever method you prefer. Lip pencils and eye pencils can be separated and stored in pretty glasses or old candle votives. When I worked at M.A.C. we organized the products behind the displays and schematics in glass beakers and the efficient and functional aesthetic has stayed with me.

Brush basics. Some people like to store their makeup brushes in upright cups or safely tucked away in a brush roll or belt (yours truly). Whichever method you prefer is fine, so long as your makeup brushes are kept out of the high humidity of the bathroom. For more on brush care read How To: Care for Your Makeup Brushes.

Keep it clean. Makeup can get messy easily so be sure and keep makeup remover or baby wipes nearby.  For stubborn spills I swear by Goo Gone. It smells like citrus scented turpentine but it works! Make a habit of wiping your products down and keeping them organized. Straighten up on a lazy Sunday to clean up after the busy weekend and prepare for the week ahead.

All the extras. To make applying your makeup even more painless and efficient keep the following items close by: makeup remover wipes, garbage can, Q-tips, coffee filters, rubbing alcohol, pencil sharpeners, tweezers, tissues, velour puffs, hair ties and clips. The aforementioned steps may look like a lot but it will help keep your makeup necessities clean and organized and get you out the door faster. Or allow you to sleep in longer.

1. Moisturize and use primer to prep your skin for makeup. Using a foundation brush, apply your NARS foundation from the center of your face, blending downward and outward. Apply concealer with a concealer brush over and under the eyes and wherever additional coverage is needed. Using a large fluffy brush set your makeup completely with the pressed powder.
2. Using a fluffy powder brush apply NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna. Apply everywhere the sun would hit you naturally, the bony prominences of the face-nose, chin, temple and forehead blending up into the hairline. To sculpt and slim your face, apply the brown powder directly under your cheekbones to contour, blending softly into the foundation and powder. You don’t want any harsh obvious lines or stripes, be sure to blend everything together. Smile to find the round, fleshy, apple of your cheeks and apply your Sex Appeal blush, blending softly up into the hairline for a natural flush.
3. Using a synthetic bristle brush, apply Voyage eye shadow to the lid and slightly up to the crease, but not above it, following the natural shape of the eye socket. You want the majority of the color and product to be on the lid.
4. Using a pencil brush, apply the NARS Duo eye shadows of Portobello to the crease, following the shape of the eye socket. Be sure you carry the eye shadow just slightly above the crease so you can see the color when your eyes are open. Using a clean tapered blending brush, softly blend the eye shadows together until you achieve the desired color, shape, and effect.
5. Using your pencil brush and the Portobello eyeshadows, lightly press in and apply to the lower lash line, smudging the product into the lower lashes, smoking out the line and blending to achieve the desired effect. You want the most concentration of color and product to be on the outer edge and corner of the eye. Concentrate on the outer edge and draw the line all the way in towards the inner corner of the eye, getting thinner as you reach the tear duct.
6. Using NARS Eye Pencil in Black Moon, starting at the outer lashes and working your way in, apply a thin, tight line to the upper lashes and lower lash line. Drawing the line thinner as you reach the inner corner and tear duct. You can go over the line to smooth it out, even out any mistakes, and make a slightly thicker line on the outer edge. Again, you want the most concentration of color and product to be on the outer edge and corner of the eye. You really want to deposit the product at the base of the lashes, making the lashes look thick and lush and further defining the eye.
7. Curl your lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler. Get as far back to the eyelid as possible (without pinching!) and pump the curler for ten seconds to really lock in the curl. Apply NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara to the upper and lower lashes, getting as far back to the root of the lashes as possible for a long, and luxurious look.
8. Use a synthetic bristle angle brush, to lightly fill in your brows with NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Portobello. Use short, upward strokes- you’re creating a shadow effect, the illusion that there is slightly more hair.
9. Line and fill in the lips completely with NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, blot with a coffee filter to make a stain and apply another coat.
10.  For added (optional) shine, apply a coat of Pure Sheer Lip Treatment in Angelique to complete your Cameron Diaz Bad Teacher look.

There is something about the siren call of a new L’Oreal mascara that I just can’t seem to resist. I see the advertisement, this one with the beautiful and talented Gwen Stefani, and the next thing I know I’m tossing the mascara into my shopping cart. The gold packaging is eye catching and very similar to this other save your money L’Oreal mascara, so read the packaging closely when purchasing L’Oreal mascaras to ensure you get the one you want.

I purchased Voluminous False Fiber Lashes {$7.95 USD} in their Black formula. The formula was not as dark as I had expected, more like a dark grey, and had a strange smell reminiscent of a bubble wand. The brush applicator is long, cone-shaped slender and curved. The applicator indicates more of a lengthening effect, not like the original voluminous mascara. The formula contains long and short nylon fibers that are visible on the wand. I had reservations about these fibers, as they are prone to shed and have the potential to irritate. My reservations were founded. I noticed some minimal clumping on the end of the wand, common for new tubes of mascara, and wiped off the excess on a coffee filter. I applied the mascara to my Shu Uemura curled lashes and found the effect to be more lengthening than thickening. It also seemed to weigh my lashes down and I lost the curl almost entirely. In addition, my lashes clumped together in unflattering looking spikes. Not the desired look I was going for, although it did remind me of Gucci’s fall 2011 spider lash, the more coats I applied the more pronounced the spiky effect. I thought the formula was somewhat dry, which seems to be part and parcel with nylon fiber formulas. As the day progressed my boyfriend was kind enough to point out to me that I had little black specks on my cheeks. The nylon “false lash fibers” had fulfilled my expectations and shed onto my face. As a makeup artist, that is a big makeup deal breaker. I expect my makeup to last the day and not migrate and travel. I don’t wear contacts but I imagine this formula definitely has the potential to irritate those who do. It is advertised as safe for contact lens wearers but the fibers may come down. Perhaps the L’Oreal  waterproof version the fibers do not shed. Regardless, I am junking this mascara and returning to my tried and true favorite, L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara in Blackest Black.
