How To: Wake Up Stunning

You can never be too rich or too hydrated. Humidifiers aren’t just for when you or the kids have got a serious case of the sniffles. They can also give you incredibly soft skin and smoother hair. Make sure you keep your filters clean and the water fresh. Go dig yours out of the closet, I’ll wait.

The princess and the satin pillowcase. This is one of those Old Hollywood beauty tips that I actually fully endorse {Vaseline smeared all over your face? Not so much}. Studies have shown that those creases on your face that you sometimes wake up with can actually lead to wrinkles. Short of sleeping flat on your back like a mummy, a satin pillowcase will not only prevent these unsightly creases but also prolong your blowout.

Soften your skin. Your basal body temperature raises one to two degrees while you sleep. Take advantage of this by using your richest and most decadent moisturizers before you turn in for the night. Pay attention to your driest areas like your knees and elbows to ensure you wake up satiny soft.

Pamper your hands and feet. Didn’t have time to get a mani/pedi this week? Fret not, you can fake one overnight. Apply a rich cuticle cream or cuticle oil to your hands and feet. Keep this in the bedside night table so you make it a nightly habit. Rub on an AHA enriched hand and foot cream, put on some cotton gloves and socks and count your zzz’s. The gloves and socks will allow the creams to penetrate that much more deeply. You may be saying to yourself that you hate going to sleep with socks on {let alone gloves} but trust me gorgeous, the results are truly addicting.

Wake up tan. There is nothing I love more than going to bed pale and waking up looking sun kissed and glowing. It puts me in the greatest mood. To that end I use a gradual self tanner like Xen-Tan Transform Luxe. It leaves my skin looking natural (never orange) and moisturized. It even smells great, it has a light vanilla scent, no weird chemical smell need apply.

Banish blemishes. Make the most of your body’s natural healing process at night by applying your tried and true potent products that make up your acne arsenal. I’m a big fan of sulfur products to bring pimples down to size.

Bring out the big guns. I’ll let famous celebrity dermatologist Patricia Wexler take it from here. “Our skin rebuilds and repairs itself as we sleep,” says Wexler. “Without environmental factors to ward off, skin is able to speed up its natural renewal process and absorb ingredients. This is why nighttime is the best time for active treatment.”  Man, do I love that woman. So whether you want to kill acne bacteria {see above} or use a powerful anti-aging product, nighttime is the right time to do so.

Prop up that pillow. If you suffer from chronic under eye bags it could be the way you’re sleeping. If you’re using one pillow, try two instead. That way fluid cannot pool into your face for 8 hours and can instead, drain away naturally.

  3. [...] Hangnails- If there is anything more painfully irritating than a hangnail I don’t want to know what it is. Our cuticles are inherently dry, the skin surrounding the cuticles becomes dehydrated so it easily splits and tears. Voila, a hangnail is born. Combat the problem with lots of moisture in the form of cuticle oil. You can use it as often as you like, but aim for at least three times a day. You can use it over your nail polish, and it will help eliminate hangnails and improve the look and feel of your nails and cuticles. My favorite cuticle oil blends sweet almond oil and vitamin E to keep cuticles conditioned and soft, I like to use it at night before bed. All part and parcel with waking up stunning. [...]
