Lay the Foundation

They call it foundation for a reason. You build upon it. When you properly even out your skin with a foundation appropriate for your skin type, you are laying the ground work for the rest of your look. You can’t just apply foundation and call it a day {try it if you don’t believe me, it just looks weird}. You need to put the life back into your skin. This is where the fun part comes in: blush, bronzer, eye shadow, mascara. All the girly touches that I adore, part of what is so fun about being a woman. Foundation is an essential investment for your daily makeup regimen. I always recommend that you try different brands and formulations until you find your own Holy Grail. I always save where I can (mascara) and invest where I think it’s most important (skincare and foundation). I cannot stress the importance of finding your perfect shade enough. First of all, please do not try a foundation on your hand to see if it’s the right shade for you. The skin of your hand is much different than that of your face, and it’s most likely more tan too. In addition, you won’t be wearing your foundation on your hand so please try it on your actual face. Women tend to be darker around the perimeter of their face and slightly lighter in the center. Therefore, try foundation on the clean, bare skin of your jaw line. If you can see it, it’s either too light or too dark for you. Do not try and fake a tan with your foundation, if you are struggling to make it work it’s not the shade for you. Your shade will match you perfectly. If you are buying your foundation in a drugstore where you can’t try before you buy, make sure they have a return policy. If you’re trying foundation at a makeup counter, duck outside in natural light with a mirror to see if it blends in seamlessly. Here are a few of my favorite foundations for every skin type:

Dry skin- NARS Sheer Glow Foundation- This hydrating, satin finish foundation makes your skin luminescent. It always achieves a subtle glow, which allows your natural complexion to shine through.

Oily skin- Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation-Voted best foundation in both Allure and InStyle magazines. It’s a lightweight formula so it never looks heavy or cakey. The color stays true, which can be an issue when dealing with oilier skins.

Combination skin- Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation-This foundation is great because it’s a treatment for your skin. It’s comprised of sixty percent water and seaweed, thus it is incredibly hydrating and protects the skin from harmful environmental damage. Future Skin leaves your skin looking dewy and soft.

Normal skin- Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation-While I detest the term “normal” in regards to skin type, I absolutely adore this gem of a foundation. There is a reason every makeup artist covets this foundation; it glides on like a dream and makes your skin look radiant and flawless. Appropriate for all skin types, it’s an indulgence that you must try.

Mature skin- Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Foundation-This Neiman Marcus exclusive foundation is utilizing the best that the worlds of skin care and makeup have to offer. The formula includes optical diffusers to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by floating over the skin instead of settling into undesirable areas, while the peptide enriched complex of Dermaxyl is one of the most potent anti-aging ingredients you can find which will actually help with wrinkles and fine lines. A foundation that does double duty, you’ve got to love that.

Drugstore option- Revlon Colorstay for Combination/Oily Skin Foundation- This foundation has SoftFlex technology, which means it’s long wearing and transfer resistant. It comes in a wide variety of shades so you’re bound to find one that’s perfect for you.
