Making Waves

When I was a little girl one of the things I loved most about the beach was…wait for it…the effect that the sun and salt water had on my hair. In addition to singing “Part of Your World” and pretending to be Ariel {and subsequently getting sand stuck in my bathing suit with my “fin” ad infinitum} I looked forward to the transformation from stick straight hair to sun bleached, ripply waves. Some things never change. I am a huge fan of balayage highlights and I adore beachy, imperfect hair. With my limited skill set where all things hair styling is concerned, I set out to find the best possible products to help me recreate the surf and wind styled locks I love oh so much. Here are my findings:

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray- Thee Holy Grail must have essential product for yours truly. Gives lots of texture, with a cool, matte finish; the less you touch your hair the better it looks. This award winning spray is suitable for all hair types. Works great on damp or dry hair, adds lift and a light hold at the roots. The packaging says it all: “sexy, salty, sun-dried, windswept hair-whenever, wherever.”

Fekkai Marine Summer Hair Beach Waves- A Sephora impulse purchase-that and I was drawn to the man behind the brand and the citrus beachy scent. Frederic Fekkai is one of the great celebrity stylists and is known for his perfectly imperfect waves. This is good for hair that’s not quite straight or curly. Unlike traditional beach hair sprays, this one adds moisture, shine and a light hold, which may or may not be your cup of tea, depending on the look you’re going for.

KMS HairPlay Sea Salt Spray- This coconut and peach scented spray was a happy accident. I was out of my Surf Spray and picked this up at the beauty supply store. It gives a naturally tousled look and a little goes a long way. It provides ample volume and leaves hair with a shine free finish. The packaging is cute and easy to use, spritz, tousle with your fingers, and you’re on your way.

For the best result, spritz these texturizing sprays on damp, towel dried hair. You can use your hands to simply scrunch your hair and go. Or for more defined waves you can opt for braiding your damp hair, either in one large braid, two braided pigtails, or several small braids for a tighter wavey effect. If you find the braid method to be too defined or chunky, you can section your damp hair off and create four to six buns. Being the lazy, sleep loving gal I am, I opt to do this braiding or bun routine at night. However, you could easily do the same in the morning while you get ready, and use the diffuser on your blow dryer to speed up and enhance your efforts. For more polished waves, you can wrap random sections of hair around a curling iron, I really like this one I received for Christmas.

Do you have a favorite product or technique for beachy waves? Are you also a Surf Spray devotee?

  1. I love the Bumble Surf spray!! I don’t know if you remember, but there used to be a beach spray a couple years ago…I can’t remember by whom…and it came in a blue bottle and you could see the oil in it, and it smelled exactly like a combination of the beach and banana boat sunscreen! And they stopped making it!! Think it was called Waves. I used it all year long too:( But I’m with ya, beachy hair is great!

I love B&B Surf Spray. I really like to use it inbetween washes. I’ll spray my hair and then use a difuser. Then my hair is so easy to put in my pony tail for work. I love this stuff. Thanks for the different recommendations. I want to try the KMS one.

  3. @Kelly Are you referring to John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves spray? I remember that stuff! But it was too much oil for me, not enough salt. Surf Spray is a thousand times better for my Chewbaca hair!
