Orange Crush

Step aside red lips, orange is making a move in a big way. Seen on the runways for Spring 2011, bold orange lipstick and lipgloss is a fresh and eye catching look. While I admit, it’s definitely a look that will take some guts to pull off, that only adds to its appeal {not an orange pun-promise}. Inspired by the runway, celebrities are taking this spring trend to the streets and showing us all how it’s done. The trick to orange lips, and any bright lip color, is making the lips the main focus. Keep the rest of your look clean and flawless. Make sure you even your skin out with foundation, concealer, and powder to set. Use a light hand when applying bronzer and a rosy blush to warm up the skin. Curl your eyelashes and use black mascara to complete the look. The bold orange lip becomes an accessory in and of itself. Just like with red, there is an orange lipstick for everyone.

Fair skin- If you have fair skin, you have two options. Go big or go not so big. For bright and bold, try M.A.C. lipstick in Morange, a true orange. For a softer, more subdued take, try Shiseido Perfect Rouge lipstick in Day Lily. For an orange gloss like Liv Tyler’s, try NARS Lip Lacquer in Capucine.

Medium to darker skin- There is a simple rule of thumb: the darker your skin, the more bold and vibrant your lip color can be. The contrast between medium and darker skins and a bold color is so strikingly beautiful. Try NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square, M.A.C. Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Good to Go.

All skin tones- A color with a tinge of pink, like a blood orange, flatters everyone. YSL Rouge Pur Shine in Blood Orange, is a sheer and glossy shade.

One caveat. With all the attention on your mouth, make sure you’re keeping up with your teeth whitening efforts. Orange shades, like brown, have the potential to make teeth appear yellowy. On the upside, the orange lip look is especially fetching on those with blue eyes {See Chloe Sevigny above}. The complementary colors of orange and blue make for a show stopping look. I’ll be giving it a whirl this weekend with M.A.C. Morange.

What do you think of the orange lip? Will you try it?

Have a great weekend!

Great post Bre. I love the coral lip for spring. It goes great with all the dreamy tangerine and sorbet colors in fashion. I love Giza lipgloss from Nars also.

I really don’t think I have the guts to wear orange lipstick, it looks so fun though. I might buy some of Lime Crime’s lipstick and just have to test it out tee hee. :D
