Q & A with BB: Baby Proofing

Q. I have a reader request, Miss Bre. Can you do a post on skincare that is a) pregnancy/breast feeding friendly and b) cruelty free? It is next to impossible to find a good product that covers these two bases! Which is why I wear California Baby on my face. Not doing anything for the wrinkles, I’m sure, but it doesn’t clog pores and it has an SPF.  xxooMe

A. The “Me” is Melisa of The Lil Bee, a writer, blogger, and mother of two of the most beautiful little girls I have ever laid eyes on. When Mel left this question in a comment, I was psyched {blogger crush!} and up for the challenge. I love babies, and the skincare of little one’s sensitive skin and their mothers is an issue near and dear to my heart. I adore animals and like the environment, cruelty free beauty is something we all should care about. Pregnancy is a time to exercise extra caution when it comes to what we put in and on our bodies. Everything you eat, apply, or come into contact with may affect not only you but also your baby.

Skincare that is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding is skincare that you have discussed with your doctor or healthcare professional. Unfortunately, more research and studies need to be done where skincare during pregnancy is concerned. However, there are some skincare ingredients and products that are to be avoided entirely or used with caution during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Because some topical ingredients get absorbed into the bloodstream, there are some you want to avoid and those include: retinoids (retinols), salicylic acid, beta hydroxy acid, benzoyl peroxide, soy, and cosmetics that contain retinol or salicylic acid (makeup for anti-aging or acne-prone skin). It’s always imperative to read your skincare and makeup labels and examine ingredients. You can never be too cautious during pregnancy. Happily, there are so many wonderful, natural and cruelty free companies out there, perfect for babies, pregnant and breast feeding mothers. To that end, here are some of my favorites for mothers:

Facial cleanser- Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel, Aubrey Organics Seaware with Rosa Mosqueta Facial Cleansing Cream, and Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel.

Facial moisturizer- Eminence Guava & Bamboo Age-Defying Moisturizer, Alba Botanica Aloe & Green Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer, and Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream.

Eye cream- Dr. Hauschka Daily Revitalizing Eye Cream, Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment, and Eminence Wild Plum Eye Cream.

Body wash-Dr. Bronner’s Organic Shikakai Baby Body Soap*, Aveda Caribbean Therapy Body Cleanser, and Alba Botanica French Lavender Bath & Shower Gel.

Body moisturizer- Alba Botanica Unscented Original Body Lotion*, Dr. Hauschka Rose Body Oil*, Aveda Replenishing Body Moisturizer and Kiss My Face C’s The Day Moisturizer.

Hands and feet-Boscia Daily Hand Revival Therapy SPF 15, Decleor Nourishing and Soothing Foot Cream, Alba Botanica Cocoa Butter Hand & Body Lotion, and Aubrey Organics Feet Relief Massage Cream.

Sunscreen-Arbonne Baby Care SPF 30*, Alba Botanica Kids Sunblock Mineral SPF 30*, Kiss My Face 100% Natural SPF 30 Sun Stick*, and Dermalogica Super Sensitive Faceblock SPF 30.

Deodorant-Dr. Hauschka Deodorant Fresh, Thai Deodorant Stone, and Alba Botanica Clear Enzyme Tea Tree Deodorant Stick.

Again, while pregnant or nursing it is important to discuss any product you use on your skin with your health care provider. If you read your labels and discover that you have been using a product that contains potentially harmful ingredients try not to stress. Simply discontinue using the product and replace it with a safe one.

Bre, this post is amazing! I am going to refer to it often, I am sure. In fact, I’m going to the mall today and am excited to get some Dermalogica. I forgot how much I used to love that brand. Thank you SO much for such a great list. I wish I’d had this when I was pregnant!

@Mel Thank you so much for commenting! I’m so glad you like it. If you ever have questions I’m just an email or comment away. Dermalogica is amazing, I should be a rep for as much as I recommend their products. Thank you for the Tweet on this post, you’re so sweet!
