Spring Fling: Blue Eye Shadow

I love that Spring is a time of renewal and regrowth. I love that it brings beautiful blooming flowers, delicious Easter candy, and fun, colorful trends in makeup. One that you will be seeing a lot of this season is blue eyeshadow. Now before you have visions of Drew Carey’s Mimi Bobeck swirling about in your head, I want to assure you that there is a blue eye look for everyone. Makeup is supposed to be fun, first and foremost. The quickest way to have fun with your makeup is to inject some color into it. Spring is the perfect time to do so, and you can let your personality and comfort zone be your guide.

Blue is an optimistic color and I think that’s what Spring is all about, and after this winter who couldn’t use a little optimism and fun? It’s flattering on most everyone, every skin tone, eye color, and hair color. It makes the whites of the eyes whiter, perks up sallow looking skin, and neutralizes under eye circles. In short, what are you waiting for?

For those of you who want to experiment with blue eye shadow, but are apprehensive as to how, I would suggest incorporating a blue mascara, eyeliner, or eye shadow into your repertoire.

If you have light colored eyes or fair skin I would suggest a powder blue, try NARS eye shadow in Sugarbaby or an aqua shade, try M.A.C. eye shadow in Aqua.

For deeper skin tones and darker eye colors I would recommend indigos, royal and cobalt blues.

Swipe shades in store to select the best blue for you. A sheer wash of color on the lid is a great option in exploring this trend. If you want a bolder blue mascara, layer a coat of white mascara underneath prior to layering the blue. It will stand out bolder and brighter that way.

For those of you who do not shy away from bold color, I would encourage you to go for it. Encompass the eye entirely in color. Apply it all over the eyelid, blending softly into the crease, and carrying it down to the lower lash line. Further define the eye and create a nice contrast with a thin line of black eyeliner on the top lashes and plenty of black mascara. To keep your eyes the main focus, keep everything else polished and neutral. Even out your skin tone, warm up with a light wash of bronzer, and slick on a coat of nude lip balm. Voila you pulled off a fun, Spring trend and nobody got hurt!

I know I will! Not only will I try to rock the blue, but my 9 year old neighbor informed me also that pink mascara with blue is in as well and that I can purchase it at Claire’s:) She’s adorable.

  3. I think a touch of blue or even turquoise can look really nice on blue/green eyes. Though I don’t think it flatters so much the brown-eyed girl (of myself)… I think I’d look like an Avatar…hehe… But it doesn’t matter, I still have a wide array of great colors to put on…like orange!

@Marta I respectfully disagree, I think it looks the absolute best on brown eyes! So much so that I wish I wore contacts-brown ones-so that I could wear blue eye shadow! Never in a million years could you look an Avatar! (that made me LOL by the way) Promise me you’ll add blue to your mix of fun colors. Enjoy!

most shades of blue eyeshadow work well, which i find is great, it usually works with most eye colors and skin tones.
i should go out and buy more shades to experiment with!
