True Grit

Exfoliation is imperative when it comes to taking care of your skin. There is nothing that gives you immediate impact and instant gratification like a good exfoliation, and that applies to the man in your life as well. Exfoliating, chemically or physically, removes dull, dead skin cells leaving your skin looking younger and smoother than before. It’s also a vital prep step in getting a close shave. Post shave, it helps prevent stubborn and unsightly ingrown hairs. If your boyfriend or husband is a wash and go guy, or if he’s been known to “borrow” your products in the shower, you may want to tell him to get his own stuff. With good reason-men’s skin is 20 to 30 percent thicker than women’s. Their skin has more collagen and elastin fibers {another reason they age so well, think George Clooney} thus, their skin can tolerate more aggressive skin care products. Exfoliation in small amounts every day will be most effective, too much can be harsh and lead to redness. So if you can’t do his and her’s bathroom, you should definitely do his and her exfoliators. Here’s the nitty gritty on my favorite scrubs for men:

Neutrogena Men Razor Defense Face Scrub- This exfoliant does exactly what it’s named for; it protects the skin and prevents razor irritation. The packaging leaves a lot to be desired {difficult to squeeze when it gets to the bottom of the tube} but the product more than makes up for it.

Anthony Logistics for Men Facial Scrub- A unique mix of beads and sand from Bora Bora brighten the complexion and prevent ingrown hairs from this best selling men’s skin care line.

Clarins Men Active Face Scrub- An exfoliating gel cleanser that uses microbeads to polish the skin and plant extracts to remove excess oil.

Dermalogica Daily Clean Scrub- A dual-action exfoliating cleanser that sweeps away dulling debris and lifts the beard for a closer, cleaner shave.

Nivea for Men Energizing Face Scrub- This invigorating, and cost effective, scrub uses Vitamin E and Vitamin B to deep clean and soften facial skin.

So funny story…I’ve been nagging my boyfriend to start using my facial scrub in the shower ENDLESSLY with no success. So I left for the weekend and took my facial scrub with me. Well when I returned back home he came out to help me with my bags and his face was BRIGHT red. I’m like…”what happened to your face???” He replied…”What? I finally used the facial scrub you told me to use.”

My boyfriend mistakenly used my Bliss Hot Body Salt Scrub on his face by mistake!! Poor guy was probably thinking I was crazy for telling him to use it!! His face was red the rest of the day. So I guess I should get him his own noticeable “manly” facial scrub!

My boyfriend doesn’t exfoliate but he needs to… He gets oily in the summer.

  3. Ok, so now I know the secret of men’s youth… Their life is easier than ours and they just had to have more collagen too!

As far as my bf beauty routines, he’s known for using a facial scrub from Biotherm that uses every now and then. And I have to confess I tried it once because I was running out of it and it worked pretty well … I have very tough skin ;) My bf is actually a lot into these kind of products so these posts will definitely help!

This one made me think of my ex. He was really into his skin. He exfoliated, used sunscreen, even a night cream. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is secretly gay.

@Kelly that is TOO funny! The poor guy, his curiosity or your persistence finally got him to try it and now he’s probably scared to do it again! Definitely get him his very own facial scrub. Get one you wouldn’t mind using as well. I’ve used the Anthony and the Dermalogica ones in a pinch, they both work great!

@Marta I know right?! It’s so unfair, no wonder they age so well and gracefully. All that collagen and elastin at their disposal! I’m glad your boyfriend takes good care of his skin, that is fantastic! He will reap the benefits with his maintenance (or mantenance ;) for years to come! Tell your boyfriend to stay tuned for upcoming men’s related posts!

My husband needs one of these ASAP. He’s finally following my lead and doing more cleansing and moisturizing, but he needs to exfoliate for sure. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Hiiiiiiiiii! I’m glad someone else loves Ruby Woo like I do. :) Honestly though, I’ve been leaning more towards Russian Red lately–it’s a little more creamy. The Ruby Woo is just SO matte sometimes. But, it’s okay because Dita aka my makeup idol wears both!

    Love your site! :)
